The castle is built on a narrow hill overlooking the Grésivaudan valley eastward and is protected East and South by the gorge of a creek. It was the largest castle of the valley.

The oldest part (the keep) is supposed to have been erected in the first half of the 12th century by the "Dauphin" Guigues the 4th.

The scale model is based on a detailed survey of the year 1339.
