The courtyard of the castle had to
contain only miserable shanties, made by cob with straw roofs.
The lodging house and related buildings of the feudal lord were
situated in the high court.
The big round tower protected the
entrance of the castle. It was reached by a wooden scaffold from
the covered way. This tower had no residential function.
The Aula is the big reception hall
of the feudal lord. It was adjacent to the rectangular tower,
which could only be reached through the lodging house of the
Lord. The description of 1339 mentions 4 fireplaces, which
denotes a certain comfort.
As the castle belonged to several
ladies, as Béatrix de Faucigny, it seemed to us realistic to
represent a medieval garden in front of the great hall, made of
small squares of greenery and flowers, with shrubs.
The forge was situated in the
courtyard. It served for the manufacturing of all the metal
utensils used in the castle, for the shoeing of horses or for
the assembly of weapons.
The account of 1418 mentions
latrines on the Western wall of the castle. We replicated the
style of the over hanged latrines of the castle of Conwy in
Wales.
The open-air tank of the castle had
to be in the high court. The model we represented is inspired by
the tank of an Alsatian castle. The rainwater was kept in the
"swimming pool" before flowing in the buried tank while being
filtered by beds of sand and coal. The water was then lifted
with buckets from the opening of the well.
